Air New Zealand Launches Bunk Beds for Economy Passengers

Air New Zealand is set to revolutionize long-haul flying with the launch of its innovative Economy Skynest, introducing bunk beds for economy-class passengers. This world-first concept aims to make ultra-long-haul journeys more comfortable and sleep-friendly without the cost of business class.

What is Air New Zealand’s Economy Skynest?

The Economy Skynest is a dedicated sleeping area featuring six lie-flat bunk beds, designed specifically for economy and premium economy travelers. These pods are arranged in a stacked configuration—similar to bunk beds—and installed on select Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Passengers can book a four-hour sleep session in these pods as an add-on to their standard ticket, allowing them to stretch out and rest properly during long flights.

Key Features of the Skynest Pods

Each Skynest sleeping pod is designed to enhance comfort and privacy, offering:

  • Full-length lie-flat bed
  • Pillow, blanket, and fresh linens
  • Privacy curtain for a personal space
  • Reading light and USB charging ports
  • Amenity kit with eye mask and earplugs

These features aim to deliver a business-class-like sleep experience at a fraction of the cost.

Launch Timeline and Routes

Air New Zealand plans to roll out the Skynest concept in 2026, with initial availability on ultra-long-haul routes such as:

  • Auckland to New York (one of the world’s longest flights, up to 18 hours)

Bookings are expected to open in May 2026, with the service launching later in the year.

Pricing and Booking Details

  • Approximate cost: around $495 (₹40,000+) per session
  • Duration: 4 hours per booking
  • Limit: One session per passenger per flight

This optional add-on allows travelers to customize their journey based on comfort needs and budget.

With the launch of the Economy Skynest, Air New Zealand is setting a new benchmark in airline innovation. By introducing bunk beds in economy class, the airline is making long-haul travel more comfortable, accessible, and passenger-friendly.
